(ANNAPOLIS, MD) – Maryland State Police are conducting an investigation into a fatal crash that occurred Thursday night in Anne Arundel County, resulting in the death of a local woman.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police Annapolis Barrack were dispatched around 9:50 p.m. to the scene of a single-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 97 near Route 50. Upon arrival, emergency services from Anne Arundel County pronounced Shannon Rita Alan, 29, of Annapolis, dead at the scene. Alan was the driver and sole occupant of the 2020 Honda HR-V involved in the accident.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Alan’s vehicle was navigating a ramp to Route 50 East when, for reasons yet to be determined, it veered off the road and collided with an embankment. Authorities have stated that they do not suspect impairment to have played a role in the crash.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration was on hand to manage road closures and assist at the scene. The investigation into the incident is being led by the Maryland State Police Crash Team, which continues to seek out the specific factors that led to the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident. No additional information has been released at this time.
