CALVERT COUNTY, MDStephen Louis Betz, 28, pleaded guilty on June 17, 2024, in Calvert County Circuit Court to charges of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment. The charges stem from an incident in September of last year. Betz faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for September 13, 2024, before Judge Mark S. Chandlee.

The incident occurred on September 10, 2023, in Owings, Maryland. Betz, accompanied by two unidentified males, confronted residents in a home over alleged stolen medication. According to the prosecution, the confrontation escalated into an argument, and one of Betz’s accomplices displayed a firearm. The altercation spilled outside the residence, resulting in shots being fired. The victim was hit, and bullets also struck a neighboring house.

Authorities revealed that Betz orchestrated the visit, bringing the gunman to the scene to collect money he believed he was owed. The gunman remains unidentified. Betz’s actions during the incident led to the charges of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
