At a ceremony held on July 11 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River, four distinguished members of the Naval District Washington (NDW) Fire Department were celebrated for their exceptional contributions and advancements. The event, attended by family, friends, and colleagues, took place in the bay of Fire Station 2.
NDW Fire and Emergency Services Chief Kevin Grinder kicked off the event, recognizing the achievements of the department’s newly promoted Fire Inspectors. He underscored the significance of the promotions, stating, “Each time a member is promoted, it shows their success in previous roles, their motivation for training, and their commitment to serving both the civilian and military community.”
The ceremony highlighted the promotions of firefighters Robin Jones and Ray Currie to the position of Fire Inspector. Their new responsibilities encompass a broad range of critical tasks, including fire and flightline extinguisher training, code enforcement, and conducting various inspections, ensuring the ongoing safety of the base’s residents and visitors.
Chief Grinder also took the opportunity to honor two of NDW’s standout performers from the past year. Fire Inspector Mike Fuhrman was named Navy Fire Inspector of the Year 2023, a prestigious recognition reflecting his dedication and effectiveness. Fuhrman’s accomplishments include conducting nearly 300 inspections, managing over 150 hot work permits without incident, and delivering extensive fire safety training across the base.
“I never thought I’d be a fire inspector,” shared Fuhrman, reflecting on his journey and expressing gratitude toward his colleagues. “But I want to thank the chiefs and the guys and gals here, because they’re what really made this possible, and it means a lot.”
The accolades continued with Fire Chief Ryan Gallant being named the Navy Civilian Fire Chief of the Year 2023. Gallant’s leadership has been instrumental across 31 bases, managing fire safety protocols for a vast array of personnel and assets. His proactive initiatives have led to significant improvements in inspection efficiency and cost savings, as well as advancements in training and emergency response capabilities.
Acknowledging the stiff competition for the award, Gallant thanked his team, saying, “Thank you to everyone who does this job every day and helps us complete the mission, because it’s a daunting task.”
The ceremony was further enriched by comments from Capt. Douglas Burfield, NAS Patuxent River Commanding Officer, who emphasized the indispensable role of the fire department in maintaining base safety and readiness. “We don’t have an air station without a fire department,” he noted, commending the daily efforts of the fire and emergency personnel.
The event not only celebrated individual excellence but also reinforced the collective commitment of NAS Patuxent River’s fire department to safeguarding their community and enhancing their operational capabilities.
