In a collaborative effort to boost career awareness among young students, middle schoolers from Charles County visited the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) campuses in La Plata and Hughesville. This visit was part of the annual Career and Technology Education (CTE) Summer Camps, a program aimed at helping rising seventh and eighth graders explore various career paths and educational opportunities.
The camps, organized by Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) in partnership with CSM, offer students a chance to plan their high school schedules with future careers in mind. During their time at the campuses, the students engaged in practical lessons and field trips, all designed and led by CSM faculty and staff. These activities not only introduced the students to different professions but also gave them a glimpse into college life.

By participating in these camps, students are encouraged to think ahead about their educational and career trajectories well before entering high school. This early exposure is intended to help them make informed decisions about their future academic and professional pursuits.
The hands-on approach of the camps reflects a growing trend in education that emphasizes experiential learning. By directly engaging with various fields, students gain a clearer understanding of what those careers entail, which in turn helps to spark their interest and potentially guide their educational choices in the coming years.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by CCPS and CSM to strengthen the link between secondary education and higher education. By providing students with opportunities to explore their interests and talents, the institutions aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in both their academic and professional futures.
