LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A high-ranking official with St. Mary’s County has been identified as the sole suspect in a narcotics tampering investigation, authorities announced Tuesday. Thomas Patrick Raley, 39, the Chief of Emergency Medical Services for the county, is under scrutiny following a series of security breaches involving fentanyl vials.

The investigation began when the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office received reports of security seal tampering on a narcotics box in a local medic unit. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division subsequently discovered that fentanyl vials within the medic box had been compromised. This revelation prompted further investigations, which unveiled additional incidents of tampering across multiple county medic units and EMS facilities.

As the probe continues, authorities are coordinating closely with the Office of the State’s Attorney for St. Mary’s County to determine the scope of the issue and the potential implications of such breaches.

Officials have not disclosed whether Raley has been charged or the details of how the tampering occurred. The ongoing investigation focuses on uncovering the extent of the tampering and identifying any additional parties who may be involved.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Individuals can contact Sergeant Kevin Meyer via email at Kevin.Meyer@stmaryscountymd.gov or by phone at 301-475-4200, ext. 8091.

This case has raised concerns about the security measures in place at local EMS facilities and the potential risks to public safety. Authorities are reviewing protocols and security measures to prevent future incidents.

As the community awaits further details, the implications of such security breaches are being considered seriously by local government and law enforcement agencies.
