In a close matchup at Prince George’s Stadium, the Bowie Baysox edged out the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Navy Night, witnessed by a crowd of 6,864 fans. This victory brought the Baysox’s record to 45-54, while the Patriots stand at an even 50-50 for the season.
The game commenced with Somerset taking an early lead in the second inning when Tyler Hardman hit a solo home run off Bowie’s starting pitcher, Cameron Weston. Despite this early setback, Weston, a promising 23-year-old in his first Double-A season, showcased resilience. He pitched 5.1 innings, matching his career-high, and finished with an impressive WHIP of 1.08 after allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out six.

The Baysox responded in the fifth inning. Alfredo Velásquez, who later accumulated three hits, scored off a sacrifice fly from Frederick Bencosme. Shortly after, Samuel Basallo made a significant impact with a 409-foot home run, clocked at 110 mph, putting Bowie in the lead. However, the Patriots quickly evened the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning through an infield RBI single by Jared Wegner.
The decisive moment came in the seventh inning when Basallo doubled off the left-field wall, driving in Velásquez for his third hit of the night and reclaiming the lead for Bowie. Bencosme, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, and Basallo were pivotal in maintaining the Baysox’s offensive momentum.
Pitching also played a crucial role in Bowie’s win. Right-hander Lincoln Henzman (3-2) threw two perfect innings, and closer Keagan Gillies secured his sixth save with a scoreless ninth, ensuring the Baysox’s victory.
Looking ahead, the Baysox will continue their six-game series against the Patriots with RHP Trace Bright scheduled to pitch against Somerset’s LHP Ben Shields in the upcoming game.
The series features additional fan-centered events, including the Baytober Craft Beer Fest offering a special beer stein and package, and Sunday’s Area 51 Day, complete with a Gunnar Henderson bobblehead giveaway and family activities.
