A tragic accident at the Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland, resulted in the death of a young child after a moon bounce was swept up by a sudden wind gust during a baseball game on Friday night. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:21 p.m., also left another child injured.

According to Charles County 9-1-1 Public Safety Communications, the inflatable play structure was unexpectedly lifted from the ground, traveling 15 to 20 feet into the air with children inside, before crashing down onto the baseball field. The game, featuring the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, was immediately disrupted by the unforeseen event.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, already on-site for the game, responded promptly to the accident. Assistance was also provided by team trainers and volunteer first responders who were among the spectators. A five-year-old boy from La Plata, who suffered critical injuries, was airlifted to Children’s Hospital by Maryland State Police Trooper 2 but was later pronounced dead. Another child, sustaining less severe injuries, was transported by MSP Trooper 7 to the hospital.

Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq., President of the Charles County Government Commission, expressed his condolences, stating, “We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time,” and acknowledged the quick response of the EMS teams and state police in providing immediate care.

Courtney Knichel, General Manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, also shared her sympathies, saying, “Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.” In light of the tragedy, the team has canceled all scheduled games and activities for today, August 3, 2024, and is offering counseling and support to those affected.

The community and attendees of the game have been left in shock by the sudden and tragic turn of events. The incident has raised concerns about the safety measures in place for recreational activities provided at public events. The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and local authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
