ST. MARY’S COUNTY, MD – Tyler Ray Marini Sater, a 22-year-old resident of Stoney Beach, Maryland, was sentenced today to 59 years in prison, with 44 years of active incarceration, for a series of criminal offenses committed during a week-long crime spree in December 2022. The sentencing was announced by St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling.

The crimes began on December 13, 2022, when Sater committed a robbery at knifepoint at the Cloud Smoke Shop in California, Maryland. Less than a week later, on December 19, Sater escalated his criminal activities, perpetrating additional offenses at the Wildewood Shopping Center. His convictions include robbery, attempted armed carjacking, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, attempted harm of a law enforcement animal, and rogue and vagabond.

In a statement, State’s Attorney Sterling emphasized the impact of Sater’s crimes on the community, noting, “While the Defendant was on supervised probation in several other counties for disturbingly similar crimes, he fled to our County and initiated a one-man crime spree. His deliberate actions victimized multiple community members, each suffering from the impact of his criminal conduct.”

Sater’s criminal actions did not stop at the Wildewood Shopping Center. While awaiting trial, he fled to Charles County, where he was subsequently charged and convicted of second-degree escape, further adding to his legal troubles.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Alena Mosier led the prosecution on behalf of St. Mary’s County citizens, with the Honorable Michael J. Stamm presiding over the case. The investigation was conducted by Detectives Warren Forinash, Daniel Sidorowicz, and Taylore Nauman of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges that law enforcement and judicial officials face in handling repeat offenders. Sater was already on supervised probation in multiple counties for similar crimes when he initiated his crime spree in St. Mary’s County. His actions have drawn attention to the need for stringent measures to prevent such individuals from continuing to pose a threat to the community.

State’s Attorney Sterling underscored the significance of Sater’s sentence as a step toward ensuring public safety. “This sentence serves as a critical step toward safeguarding the public and ensuring that this Defendant can no longer target the citizens in our community,” Sterling said.

The sentencing brings a sense of closure to the victims of Sater’s crimes, who have been profoundly affected by his actions. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in the criminal justice system to protect the public from individuals who repeatedly engage in criminal behavior.

Sater’s sentence is a culmination of efforts by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the State’s Attorney’s Office, and the judicial system to hold him accountable for his actions. The collaborative work of Detectives Forinash, Sidorowicz, and Nauman was instrumental in bringing Sater to justice and ensuring that he faces the consequences of his crimes.

The community of St. Mary’s County can now breathe a little easier knowing that Sater will spend the next several decades behind bars, unable to further harm its residents. However, the case also serves as a stark reminder of the need for ongoing efforts to address the root causes of crime and to provide support for both victims and those at risk of falling into a life of crime.
