
In a significant brand overhaul, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) introduced a new logo and institutional branding during its annual Convocation on August 16. This event, which marks the beginning of the academic year, was attended by faculty and staff who gathered to strategize for the upcoming semester.
The revamped logo, drawing inspiration from the cupola atop the Administration Building on CSM’s La Plata Campus, replaces the previous emblem featuring a yellow graduation cap. This change marks the third iteration in the college’s visual history, reflecting a deeper connection to the region’s architectural heritage and maritime symbolism.
CSM’s new logo is designed to symbolize inclusivity and service to the tri-county area—Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s. The design elements of the cupola are intended to evoke the region’s lighthouse structures, underscoring the college’s role in guiding students through their educational and professional journeys.
According to Avis McMillon, Associate Vice President of Marketing, Admissions, and Recruitment at CSM, the rebranding initiative was driven by extensive community engagement. “Over the past year, our award-winning Marketing team has engaged with our community—students, employees, and residents—to understand how they see the College of Southern Maryland,” McMillon stated. She noted that this collaborative process was crucial in refining the brand to better align with the institution’s values and the expectations of its stakeholders.
The college’s new slogan, “Your Pathway to Possibility,” echoes themes from previous CSM campaigns and has resonated strongly during community consultations. McMillon emphasized that CSM’s rebranding reflects its commitment to being welcoming, supportive, energetic, and future-focused, traits that are pivotal to the institution’s identity.
During her address at the Convocation, McMillon also highlighted the unique position of CSM as the sole comprehensive postsecondary institution in the area, offering accessible, affordable, and high-quality education to a diverse range of learners.
“We are all ambassadors of the CSM brand,” McMillon told the audience, underscoring the collective responsibility of CSM staff and faculty in embodying and promoting the college’s values both on and off campus.
