After two decades of performing covers in Southern Maryland, the band HydraFX is now set to release an original music album titled “Here & Now” on August 30. This album marks a significant shift for the band, which has been a beloved fixture in the local music scene, entertaining audiences with covers ranging from The Jackson 5 to System of a Down.

The band, comprising founding member Greg Barrick (vocals/guitar), Wally Ivanov (guitar), Justin Myles (drums), and Sean Postanowicz (bass), has spent the past eight months crafting this collection of songs. Their journey began with a decision last December to explore original music, inspired by the vibrant local music scene.
Barrick explained the impetus for the album: “We decided to record this album after feeling inspired by what the local music community is doing. If you love music like we all do in this area, and you’re hearing all of the great local original music, you can’t help but feel that you also have something to say and share with your community.”
The creative process took a crucial turn during a retreat in the West Virginia mountains in February, where the band solidified the structure of their new songs over an extended weekend. “We really dove into the cabin sessions, took all our gear, and mic’ed everything for four days straight,” Myles noted, describing the intense and productive session that expanded their initial four or five songs to a robust lineup of eight to nine tracks.
In April, recording commenced at Mylestone Studios in Lusby, Maryland, where the ten tracks were laid down. The album showcases a wide range of musical styles, reflecting the band’s eclectic influences. From hard rock to reggae and even a Motown-flavored track, “Here & Now” promises a diverse auditory experience.
Ivanov highlighted the band’s open creative approach: “I want music to transport me to a place, a time, and emotion. There are songs on this record that do a good job doing just that.” The album is described by the band members as a “musical rollercoaster” and a “playlist of our lives,” incorporating elements of reggae, rock, grunge, R&B, and Latin drumming.
HydraFX will perform the album live in its entirety on September 7 at the Rex Theater in Leonardtown, Maryland, supported by local bands Squid Inc. and Amateur Hour. This event not only celebrates their new work but also underscores their ongoing commitment to their community and musical roots.
