The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has proven to be a crucial first step in the careers of many local students, including Ralph Gootee, a Charles County native whose early educational experiences at CSM helped catapult him into a thriving tech career. Gootee, who attended CSM after graduating from Lackey High School in 2001, describes the community college as a “pathway to possibility.”

“CSM was instrumental in setting the direction for my educational and professional journey,” Gootee shared. After completing his time at CSM, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Theoretical Mathematics at Salisbury University, followed by a master’s in Applied Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. His impressive career trajectory has included co-founding the company PlanGrid, which Autodesk acquired for $875 million in 2018, and holding significant roles at major companies like Pixar Animation Studios and Sony Ericsson. He is currently the co-founder and CTO of TigerEye, a company focused on driving innovation and security in the tech industry.

Gootee credits much of his success to the foundational experiences and the guidance he received at CSM. “The classes I took and the professors I interacted with at CSM were pivotal in preparing me for my future endeavors,” he stated. He highlighted the role of his math and history classes in shaping his skills and passions, noting that the college’s focus on STEM education was particularly beneficial.

CSM offers a range of programs aimed at supporting students in STEM fields. This includes scholarships through partnerships like The Patuxent Partnership’s Pathways Scholarship, research opportunities funded by the National Science Foundation, and guaranteed transfer agreements with prestigious programs, enhancing students’ readiness for advanced education and competitive careers.

Gootee remains a vocal advocate for the value of community colleges, especially for students pursuing careers in STEM. He frequently discusses the advantages of starting at an institution like CSM, where students can explore various fields before committing to a specific career path. His advice to current students: “Maximize your STEM classes at CSM to build a strong foundation for your future studies.”

His belief in CSM’s role as a critical stepping stone was further evidenced when he spoke at the Rotary Club of Charles County this summer, an event where Rotary Vice President and fellow CSM alumna Lisa Case noted, “Ralph really hit home when he spoke so highly of CSM and detailed how the college was the perfect steppingstone for him.”

Despite his national success and relocation to California, Gootee maintains strong ties to his roots. “CSM will always hold a special place in me because it laid down the foundation for my future career,” he affirmed, underscoring the profound impact that the College of Southern Maryland has had on his life and career.
