LA PLATA, MD—On Monday, August 26, 2024, Dustin Marcel Brown, 39, of Waldorf, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his involvement in the creation and possession of child pornography. Charles County Circuit Court Judge William R. Greer, Jr. handed down the sentence following Brown’s guilty plea to five counts of Child Pornography: Film in Sex Act on March 8, 2024. Upon his eventual release, Brown will be under supervised probation for five years and must register as a Tier II sex offender for the next 25 years.

The investigation that led to Brown’s arrest and conviction began on August 29, 2023, when Charles County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence in Waldorf after receiving reports of a suspicious item found in the home. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the mother of a then-16-year-old girl, who had discovered a hidden camera installed inside a ceiling-mounted smoke alarm in her daughter’s bedroom.

Further investigation revealed that Brown, who was known to the victim and her mother, had secretly installed the camera and recorded over 4,000 video clips, including 81 explicit videos. Brown admitted to placing the camera during the investigation.

During the sentencing phase, the Assistant State’s Attorney commented on the profound impact of Brown’s actions, stating, “This young lady, her mother, and [Brown’s] children will forever be changed and impacted by [Brown’s] actions.” She emphasized the betrayal, noting that Brown was supposed to protect the victim, not exploit her for his “selfish, self-satisfying interest.”

The breakdown of the sentence is as follows:

  • Count 2: 10 years for Child Pornography: Film in Sex Act.
  • Count 4: An additional 10 years, consecutive to Count 2.
  • Count 6: A further 10 years, consecutive to Counts 2 and 4.
  • Count 8: 10 years, with 5 years suspended, consecutive to the preceding counts.
  • Count 10: 10 years, fully suspended, consecutive to all previous counts.

Brown will also undergo 5 years of supervised probation following his incarceration.
