As September ushers in Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO) is actively promoting its Co-Responder Program. This pivotal initiative, launched in September 2021, brings together law enforcement and mental health professionals to provide immediate support during mental health crises.

The Co-Responder Program, pioneered under the guidance of Community Mental Health Liaison Alexis Higdon, operates by pairing SMCSO Crisis Intervention Team officers with mental health experts. These teams jointly respond to incidents involving individuals experiencing mental health crises. This collaboration not only facilitates rapid mental health evaluations but also ensures timely access to necessary behavioral health services.
Over the past two years, this innovative approach has proven instrumental in St. Mary’s County, aiding over a hundred people by connecting them with immediate mental health care. This initiative reflects the SMCSO’s dedicated effort to mitigate suicide risks and enhance mental health outcomes across the community.
In addition to direct crisis intervention, the SMCSO offers extensive support resources through its website. Available at www.firstsheriff.com/community/resources, the site provides a detailed directory of services including behavioral health, crisis management, and financial assistance. For immediate emotional support, individuals are encouraged to contact the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, ensuring help is just a moment away.
