The St. Mary’s College of Maryland volleyball team faced a mixed outcome during their trip to Virginia Beach, splitting victories in a tri-match against Regent University and Randolph College. The Seahawks clinched a victory over Regent with a 3-1 score but fell to Randolph in a similarly structured 1-3 defeat.

In the first match against Regent University, whose team stands at 0-2, St. Mary’s set a strong pace with a comfortable 25-16 win in the opening set. The competition tightened in the second set, with the Seahawks narrowly securing a win at 27-25. Regent bounced back in the third set, capturing it 25-19. However, St. Mary’s sealed their victory by taking the fourth set 25-21.

Key players for St. Mary’s included Maya Mauro, who led with 10 kills, and Stella Marrero, who was formidable on defense with 21 digs. Gracie Zartman also stood out with four aces during the match.

However, the day’s second match against the undefeated Randolph College (2-0) presented more challenges for the Seahawks. St. Mary’s began with a solid 25-19 win in the first set but struggled through the next two, losing both 25-13. Randolph secured their overall win with a close 25-23 victory in the fourth set.

Noteworthy performances in the second match included Zartman’s eight kills and another 21 digs from Marrero, demonstrating consistency in her defensive role.

The Seahawks are slated to play next against Mary Baldwin on September 3 at 6:00 PM in St. Mary’s City, Maryland, hoping to build on the lessons from this tri-match.
