In a prompt response to a distress call, officers from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Marine Unit successfully aided in rescuing two teenagers after their boat capsized on the Potomac River near Maryland Point Camp Merrick. The incident, which took place on August 24, involved a 19-foot vessel and occurred close to the boundary with Fairview Beach, VA.

According to the CCSO, their Marine Unit, which operates under a partnership with the US Coast Guard, was quick to respond. Cpl. Chambers, PFC Garner, and Charles County Medic Welch #ES185 were among the first responders. The CCSO Marine Unit’s Boat #2, the Zodiac, which was already patrolling the area from Smallwood State Park, reached the distressed teenagers swiftly.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed that the teenagers were no longer in the water. They had been safely picked up by a nearby boater who was close to the scene at the time of the accident. Following the rescue, the CCSO team remained with the overturned boat, ensuring it was secured and subsequently removed from the channel by a tow boat, preventing any further navigation hazards.

This event marks the second incident of a boat overturning in this part of the Potomac River within the last two weeks, prompting local authorities to issue safety reminders to the public about the potential dangers of water activities. The CCSO emphasizes the importance of safety measures and preparedness while on the water, especially during the busy summer months when water traffic peaks.

The CCSO Marine Unit is trained and equipped to handle various marine emergencies and coordinates regularly with the US Coast Guard to ensure a rapid response capability throughout the year. Their efforts in incidents like these highlight the critical role they play in maintaining safety and security on local waterways.
