LA PLATA, MD—A Charles County Circuit Court Judge sentenced 56-year-old Bryantown resident Pio Arnoldo Flores to 12 years in prison on Thursday for sexually abusing a minor, announced State’s Attorney Tony Covington. Following his prison term, Flores will face five years of supervised probation and must register as a Tier III sex offender, adhering to lifetime supervision conditions.

The conviction stems from a guilty plea by Flores on April 16, 2024, for the sexual abuse of a 16-year-old victim. The abuse began in April 2020 when the victim was just 13 and continued until January 2023. Flores, who had known the victim since her infancy, escalated from inappropriate touching to more severe sexual acts over time.

The case came to light on November 14, 2023, when the Charles County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by the Department of Human Services about allegations of child sexual abuse. An investigation followed, confirming the prolonged abuse endured by the victim.

During the sentencing, the Assistant State’s Attorney described the offenses as “the worst of the worst acts that constitute Sex Abuse of a Minor.” She highlighted the enduring psychological impact these crimes would have on the victim, stating that “the psychological scars will affect this young lady for the rest of her life.”

In detail, the court’s sentence for Flores includes 20 years with 12 years served and the remainder suspended, followed by a mandatory five-year term of supervised probation.

The community and legal observers have noted this case as a significant legal outcome in Charles County’s ongoing efforts to address and prevent sexual offenses against minors.
