James Earl Jones, the legendary actor whose resonant voice defined iconic roles in film and theater, died this morning at his home in Dutchess County, NY. He was 93. His representatives at Independent Artist Group confirmed his passing.

Jones, an EGOT winner, distinguished himself across multiple entertainment platforms, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, three Tony Awards, and an Honorary Academy Award. His career spanned over five decades, beginning with his role in the 1964 Stanley Kubrick film Dr. Strangelove. Jones is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Darth Vader in the Star Wars saga, a role that began in the original trilogy and extended into later sequels, including Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One.

In addition to his memorable film roles, Jones lent his voice to Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King in both the 1994 animated and 2019 hybrid/live-action films. He also voiced the iconic “This is CNN” tagline, further cementing his status as a prominent voice actor.

Born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, Jones’ filmography includes significant roles in Conan the Barbarian, Coming to America, The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Sneakers. His television work brought him Emmy Awards for Gabriel’s Fire and Heat Wave, both in 1991.

Jones’ Broadway career was equally illustrious. He won Tony Awards for his performances in The Great White Hope and Fences, with additional nominations for his roles in various other plays. He also received a Special Tony Award in 2017.
