At around 11:51 a.m. on September 12, law enforcement authorities in Waldorf, Maryland, responded to a situation involving an armed suspect with active arrest warrants. The incident occurred in the 14700 block of Bassford Road, where police were informed that Patrick James Roberts, Jr., a 28-year-old wanted in connection with a violent assault and stabbing, was located inside a residence.
Officers promptly established a perimeter around the home. Shortly after, Roberts emerged from the house wielding a large knife and fled into nearby woods, prompting a pursuit by a police K9 unit. During the pursuit, the K9 was released and attempted to apprehend Roberts. According to police reports, while the dog engaged, Roberts threatened the animal with the knife. In response, the accompanying officer discharged his firearm, hitting Roberts once in the stomach.
Authorities were quick to provide first aid to the injured suspect before transporting him to a local hospital. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. The police K9 involved was examined post-incident and found to have sustained no injuries. The officer involved in the shooting was unharmed and has since been placed on administrative leave as per protocol, pending a thorough investigation.
This event stems from an earlier incident reported on September 8. Police were called to the same address on Bassford Road after Roberts allegedly stabbed his elderly relative’s caregiver during a confrontation. Roberts reportedly attacked the caregiver as he attempted to prevent him from stealing a wallet. The victim suffered serious abdominal injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Following this assault, Roberts fled the scene, stealing a vehicle belonging to his relative. Authorities later issued arrest warrants for Roberts on charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, theft, and unlawful vehicle taking.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office’s Office of Professional Responsibility is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the police shooting. The Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office has also been informed in line with agency policies. Further updates on the investigation and Roberts’ legal proceedings are expected to be made public as they become available.
