The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team has achieved its first regional ranking since 2011, landing in the No. 6 spot in Region IV in the first Division III rankings released by United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday, September 10. The Seahawks, currently posting an impressive 4-0-1 record in the 2024 season, join Penn State Harrisburg as one of two United East Conference women’s soccer programs to make the poll. Penn State Harrisburg was ranked No. 8 in the same region.

This latest ranking marks a significant achievement for St. Mary’s, as the team has not been regionally ranked for more than a decade. In 2011, the Seahawks climbed to a No. 9 ranking early in the season after starting that campaign with four straight wins. They concluded the 2011 season with a notable run to the Capital Athletic Conference tournament championship game as the No. 6 seed.

A Strong Start to the 2024 Season

The Seahawks are off to their best start in 13 years, recording four wins and one draw through their first five games. They opened the 2024 season with three consecutive victories and won their own Seahawk Classic title during that stretch. Following their early success, St. Mary’s participated in the Salisbury University Classic, where they faced tough competition. The team battled No. 25 McDaniel College to a 1-1 draw and then secured a 2-0 shutout win against Methodist University.

The Seahawks’ strong performance has led to their well-earned spot in the Region IV rankings, showcasing their potential for continued success as the season progresses.

Upcoming Game Against Stevenson University

The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, September 11, at 7 p.m. when they host Stevenson University at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. Stevenson currently holds a 1-1-1 record and will be looking to challenge the Seahawks in this non-conference matchup. St. Mary’s will aim to extend their unbeaten streak and continue their upward momentum in the rankings.

Historical Context for Seahawks Soccer

The last time St. Mary’s College earned a spot in the regional rankings, they experienced a successful 2011 campaign, characterized by early wins and a deep run into the postseason. The Seahawks, now building on their strong start this year, will look to carry forward the same competitive spirit as they navigate the remainder of the season.

As the team aims to maintain their ranking and possibly climb higher, head coach Peter Krech and his squad are focused on continuing to deliver solid performances in every match.
