CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. – The Town of Chesapeake Beach issued a statement clarifying the situation surrounding the Beach Buccaneers’ youth football games scheduled for Saturday, September 21, at Kellam’s Field. This comes in response to misinformation circulating online and through emails suggesting that the town abruptly canceled the games for unknown reasons. Town officials emphasized that these claims are inaccurate and aimed at creating division within the community.
The rumors began circulating recently, alleging that Chesapeake Beach had unexpectedly canceled the Beach Buccaneers’ scheduled home games on September 21. According to the town’s official statement, this narrative is not based on fact. Town officials highlighted that they had been coordinating with the Beach Buccaneers leadership for months, particularly regarding potential scheduling conflicts due to the “Taste the Beaches” event scheduled for the same day.
For the past six months, the Town of Chesapeake Beach has been in communication with the Beach Buccaneers’ President, discussing the fall sports season schedule. The town had informed the team’s leadership that Kellam’s Field would be used as a shuttle point for the “Taste the Beaches” event on September 21 to provide free public parking. Despite not receiving a full schedule from the Beach Buccaneers for the fall season, the town proactively worked to accommodate both the youth football games and the shuttle service for event attendees.
When the Buccaneers’ President reached out to the Town Administrator on September 10 to request that games be held on the same day as the “Taste the Beaches” event, the town collaborated to ensure that both activities could proceed smoothly. A plan was devised to minimize any potential safety risks, such as coordinating game times with shuttle routes and directing parents and players to park in the northwest corner of the Kellam’s Field complex. This would allow safe access to the field via a side gate, keeping children clear of shuttle traffic.
On September 18, however, the President of the Beach Buccaneers informed the Town Administrator that most of the scheduled games for September 21, except for flag football, would be moved to another field. This decision was made solely by the Buccaneers’ leadership, with no directive or demand from the Town of Chesapeake Beach.
In its statement, the town requested that the Beach Buccaneers leadership address and correct the misinformation circulating about the situation. Town officials stressed that spreading inaccurate information does not serve the best interests of the children or the community. The town is committed to transparency and working closely with the team to ensure the smooth coordination of both events.
“The Town of Chesapeake Beach remains committed to the youth that access Kellam’s Field at the center of our amazing community,” the statement concluded.
As of now, the town expects the Beach Buccaneers to inform parents, coaches, and the broader public of the correct information regarding the game schedule and arrangements for the day. The town remains dedicated to maintaining Kellam’s Field as a resource for the community’s youth, underscoring the importance of cooperation and clear communication between the town and the Beach Buccaneers.
