AI adoption is steadily rising among U.S. businesses across industries and regions, according to a recent analysis based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 Business Trends and Outlook Survey. The report highlights a growing number of businesses integrating artificial intelligence into their operations, with larger firms leading the way. Notably, smaller businesses with fewer employees are also showing a strong inclination toward adopting AI technologies, particularly for replacing employee tasks.

Currently, 5.5% of businesses nationwide report using AI in the production of goods and services, an increase from 3.7% just a year ago. Moreover, 8.1% of firms plan to adopt AI within the next six months, signaling continued momentum in AI integration.

AI Usage and Adoption Trends

According to the survey, larger firms, defined as those with more than 250 employees, are the most likely to implement AI technology, with 8.3% of these businesses using AI in their production processes. Interestingly, businesses at the opposite end of the size spectrum, those with one to four employees, also rank high in AI adoption, with 6.1% reporting usage. Smaller businesses are particularly focused on utilizing AI to automate or replace employee tasks.

Currently, 26.6% of businesses that use AI are deploying it to automate employee tasks. AI is being employed across a wide range of functions, including machine learning, natural language processing, and voice recognition technologies. The analysis further notes that AI adoption tends to be higher in sectors like information (20.5%), professional, scientific, and technical services (14.9%), and educational services (10.3%).

Geographically, businesses in Western states are leading in AI usage, while firms in the South and Midwest have lower adoption rates. Some of this discrepancy can be attributed to industry concentration. For example, the information and technology sectors are more common in regions where AI usage is higher.

Maryland’s AI Adoption Rates

Maryland ranks 11th in the nation for AI adoption, with 5.7% of businesses currently using AI, slightly above the national average of 5.5%. Among Maryland businesses that have integrated AI into their operations, 28.1% are using the technology to replace employee tasks. This percentage surpasses the national average of 26.6%, indicating a strong interest in automating roles and functions through AI.

Looking ahead, 7.6% of Maryland businesses plan to adopt AI within the next six months, again slightly below the national average of 8.1%. However, among those planning to adopt AI, 33.4% expect to use it for task automation, a figure that closely mirrors the national projection of 34.4%.

The most common application of AI among Maryland firms is in marketing automation, a trend that aligns with national data. Marketing automation typically involves the use of AI to optimize advertising campaigns, personalize customer interactions, and enhance overall marketing strategies.

Industry-Specific and Geographic Considerations

While businesses in certain sectors are quick to adopt AI, others have been slower to integrate the technology. For example, industries like construction, transportation, warehousing, and accommodation and food services have the lowest rates of AI adoption, with fewer than 2% of firms using AI.

Maryland’s relatively high rate of AI adoption is likely influenced by the state’s strong presence in technology, healthcare, and professional services—industries that tend to be more open to technological advancements. As AI continues to evolve, Maryland businesses, like those in other high-adoption states, are likely to expand their use of AI across a broader range of functions.

AI’s Potential for Business Transformation

AI offers numerous advantages for businesses of all sizes. From automating routine tasks to enhancing data analysis and improving decision-making, AI has the potential to boost efficiency and reduce operational costs. However, concerns remain regarding the potential displacement of jobs as AI becomes more widespread. Despite this, the analysis shows that businesses are increasingly open to using AI to replace certain employee tasks.

As AI adoption continues to grow, businesses in Maryland and across the U.S. will likely explore more sophisticated uses of the technology. AI’s ability to streamline operations, improve customer engagement, and drive innovation is expected to make it an essential tool for businesses looking to remain competitive in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
