A Calvert County resident recently hit it big in the Maryland Lottery, winning $40,000 through the Mega Millions drawing on September 3. Tim Todd, a 52-year-old electrician from Huntingtown, saw his initial $10,000 third-tier prize quadruple thanks to the Megaplier feature he added to his ticket.

“I do it all the time. It’s more money that you can win,” said Todd, who regularly uses the Megaplier option for an extra dollar per ticket. The Megaplier feature multiplies non-jackpot prizes, and in this case, turned his $10,000 win into a $40,000 windfall.

Tim Todd of Huntingtown added the Megaplier feature to increase his Mega Millions prize to $40,000.

Todd was out running errands when he decided to check his $15 quick-pick ticket, which he had purchased at the Dunkirk Wawa on 10245 Kirksville Lane. As he scanned the ticket at the grocery store, he noticed something unusual. Instead of the usual message, it read, “Go to Lottery.”

“I said, ‘This must be something good,’” Todd recalled. Curious and eager to find out his winnings, he quickly took the ticket to the store clerk, who confirmed that he had won $40,000.

While Todd is thrilled with his winnings, he remains practical about how he plans to use the money. His first priority is to pay off bills, though he hasn’t yet decided what to do with the remainder of his prize.

The Huntingtown resident, an avid Washington Commanders fan, has a habit when it comes to buying lottery tickets. He typically purchases five lines per ticket and folds it in half before placing it in his wallet for good luck. On this particular ticket, the winning numbers came from the third line.

“I was happy when I won on the third line,” Todd said with a smile, reflecting on his decision to purchase multiple lines despite his wife’s suggestion to play just one line per drawing.

Todd’s winning ticket was bought at the Dunkirk Wawa, a popular spot for lottery players in Calvert County. The retailer will also benefit from the sale, receiving a bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Todd’s win marks yet another success story for Maryland Lottery players, as residents across the state continue to experience good fortune in various drawings and scratch-offs. For Todd, his strategy of adding the Megaplier has certainly paid off, turning what could have been a $10,000 prize into a more substantial $40,000.

Though he’s currently focused on handling the financial side of his win, Todd may eventually look into treating himself to something special or using the extra funds for future endeavors. However, for now, he’s content with the knowledge that his unexpected windfall will help alleviate some financial burdens.
