PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION, MD – The NAS Patuxent River Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) will hold its next public meeting on October 9, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Frank Knox Building, located at 21866 Cedar Point Road, Patuxent River, Maryland, Room 100.

The Restoration Advisory Board serves as a communication bridge between the community and government authorities, specifically addressing environmental restoration projects at NAS Patuxent River. The meeting will provide an opportunity for residents, local officials, and other stakeholders to receive updates and give feedback on the ongoing environmental restoration efforts at the naval station.

The U.S. Navy, working alongside regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maryland Department of the Environment, is responsible for the decision-making process related to the environmental cleanup at NAS Patuxent River. The RAB ensures that the public is kept informed and can provide input on these decisions. This feedback is a critical component of the overall environmental restoration strategy, which includes both investigation and cleanup actions.

Mission and Role of the RAB

The NAS Patuxent River Restoration Advisory Board was established in January 1995 and plays a vital role in fostering communication between military personnel and the surrounding community regarding environmental issues. The RAB is co-chaired by an elected community member and a Navy representative, ensuring balanced perspectives from both the public and government officials.

The primary objectives of the RAB are:

  1. To provide public access to information about the investigation and remediation efforts underway at NAS Patuxent River.
  2. To actively seek input from the community and other stakeholders regarding the environmental cleanup activities.
  3. To increase the Navy’s responsiveness to community concerns about environmental restoration at the installation.

The RAB is seen as a critical part of the partnership working toward the effective and efficient remediation of NAS Patuxent River’s environmental issues. In particular, it helps create an open and transparent process where the community can learn about and comment on the Navy’s efforts to address any environmental concerns at the base.

Diverse Representation in the Advisory Board

The RAB comprises representatives from various key groups, including the U.S. Navy, the EPA, the Maryland Department of the Environment, local government officials, and community members. The inclusion of these diverse stakeholders allows for a comprehensive approach to addressing environmental concerns and ensures that decisions are made with the community’s input in mind.

Members of the RAB are considered essential contributors to the communication process, as they are regularly provided with updates on the Environmental Restoration (ER) Program. Their input on remediation efforts is actively solicited, and they are encouraged to voice concerns or suggestions regarding the environmental restoration of NAS Patuxent River.

Importance of Public Participation

The public meeting scheduled for October 9 provides an opportunity for community members to engage with the RAB and to stay informed about ongoing and future environmental restoration activities at NAS Patuxent River. The Navy encourages the public to attend these meetings, as the feedback provided during these sessions plays a significant role in shaping the decisions made by the Navy and its regulatory partners.

The RAB’s approach emphasizes transparency and responsiveness, and the board’s efforts ensure that the community’s environmental restoration concerns are not only heard but also considered throughout the decision-making process.

For those interested in attending, the meeting will take place at NAS Patuxent River’s Frank Knox Building, located at 21866 Cedar Point Road, Patuxent River, MD, in Room 100, at 6 p.m. on October 9, 2024.
