GREAT MILLS, Md. – The Witches of St. Mary’s will take flight again this October for an evening of fun and whimsical frippery at the Loffler Senior Center. On Friday, October 25, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., attendees of all ages are invited to participate in an enchanting and lighthearted celebration of the Halloween season.
The event, now in its second year, encourages anyone and everyone to dress up as witches or wizards for a few magical hours of dancing, socializing, and general good-natured fun. Organizers of the event, a group of local St. Mary’s residents who enjoy dancing and have a flair for theatrics, are excited to offer another free and family-friendly gathering for the community.

“Who are the Witches of St. Mary’s?” the group’s announcement reads. “YOU! ME! Anyone and everyone is invited to be a witch or wizard for a few witching hours at the Witches of St. Mary’s afternoon of fun.”
Participants of all ages, from toddlers to centenarians, are encouraged to attend, dressed in their best spell-casting attire. The event promises a casual atmosphere, where dancing is optional but tapping your toes to the beat of the “witch dance” may be hard to resist.
In addition to the dancing, the event will feature enchanting food trucks offering snacks for hungry sorcerers, while younger witches and wizards can enjoy free candy. A highlight of the event will be the fanciful broom decorating contest, where attendees can showcase their creatively adorned brooms. The winner of the contest will take home a magical stained glass artwork created by local artist Denise Benedik.
While the gathering is all about having fun, there is also a charitable aspect. Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items, which will be donated to the St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen in Great Mills. Suggested donation items include juice, condiments, crackers, and seasoning packets, which are essential supplies for the local soup kitchen.
Though the event is free to attend, this request for donations serves as a meaningful way to give back to the community while celebrating the spirit of the Halloween season. Organizers emphasized that the group of witches and wizards is “definitely the magnanimous sort,” and this food drive is an opportunity to support neighbors in need.
For those who are looking for something a little extra magical, there will also be free Tarot readings available during the event. Attendees can discover what the cards have in store for them as they partake in the festivities.
The Witches of St. Mary’s event originated last year, with organizers intending to make it an annual tradition in St. Mary’s County. The goal is to create a lighthearted and festive event that fosters a sense of togetherness among family, friends, and neighbors. As Halloween approaches, it offers a unique opportunity for the community to gather in a playful, yet meaningful, way.
Whether you’re a good witch or a bad witch, the Witches of St. Mary’s welcomes everyone to dust off their brooms and join in the fun. With its combination of whimsical entertainment and a charitable cause, this event is quickly becoming a beloved part of the fall calendar in St. Mary’s County.
