LANHAM, N.Y. – Junior defender Ashlyn Bonner, from Ellicott City, Md., has earned her second United East Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award for the 2024 season, as announced Monday, September 30. Bonner’s outstanding performance helped the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team secure two consecutive shutouts, extending their winning streak to four games.

Bonner played a pivotal role in the Seahawks’ success last week, contributing to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Marymount University on September 25 and a 3-0 conference-opening win against Wilson College on September 28. The 5-foot-9 team captain not only showcased her defensive skills but also provided key assists in both matches.

In the victory over Marymount, Bonner assisted on the game-winning goal while also anchoring the Seahawks’ defense, which limited the Saints to just one shot on goal and nine total attempts. Her defensive prowess was equally evident in the match against Wilson College, where she assisted on the third goal and contributed to a defensive effort that held Wilson to only five shots, four of which were on target.

This is Bonner’s second time receiving the Defensive Player of the Week honor this season. She first earned the accolade on September 9 for her strong performance earlier in the year. With this recognition, Bonner solidifies her role as a leader on the field for St. Mary’s College, which currently boasts a 9-1-1 record.

The Seahawks will look to continue their impressive form when they take on the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday, October 1, in a non-conference matchup at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
