ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Volleyball team (9-8) fell in straight sets to United East Conference rival Gallaudet (15-4) on Tuesday night. Despite a strong effort, the Seahawks were unable to overcome the Bison’s dominance, losing 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-13) at home.

The match saw the Seahawks start strong but unable to maintain momentum as Gallaudet took control of the game after the early stages of each set.

How the Match Unfolded

In the first set, the Seahawks jumped out to a quick lead, going ahead 4-3. However, the teams battled evenly for much of the early portion, with the score tied at nine points apiece. It was at this point that Gallaudet gained control, capitalizing on Seahawk errors and swinging the match firmly in their favor. The Bison went on a 12-2 run, taking a commanding 21-11 lead before closing out the set 25-14.

The second set was much more competitive, with both teams trading points throughout. St. Mary’s kept the game close, taking advantage of a few Bison errors and a service ace from Stella Marrero to tie the score at 15. Despite the effort, Gallaudet once again took control of the set’s momentum, finishing strong with a 10-4 run to win the set 25-19 and secure a 2-0 match lead.

In the third and final set, Gallaudet came out strong, quickly establishing a 5-0 lead. St. Mary’s attempted to rally, sparked by a Grace Gilmore kill that helped the Seahawks tie the score at nine. Elizabeth Childs’ service run and key kills from Kaleigh Wiseman also fueled the Seahawks’ brief comeback. However, Gallaudet regained control and never looked back, cruising to a 25-13 victory to sweep the match 3-0.

Key Performances

Despite the loss, a few Seahawks turned in strong performances. Maya Mauro led St. Mary’s with five kills, while Julia Bobrowski contributed two service aces. Grace Gilmore added two blocks to help the Seahawk defense.

The Bison, led by their consistent play and strong runs, were able to overcome the Seahawks’ attempts to regain momentum, especially in the second and third sets. Gallaudet’s efficiency and composure allowed them to dominate the scoreboard, capitalizing on key moments throughout the match.
