PATUXENT RIVER, Md.— A major milestone in training for the CH-53K King Stallion helicopter was achieved when the Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) 1 completed a Test Readiness Review (TRR) and Joint Final Testing (JFT). On Aug. 16, the AATD was declared Ready for Training (RFT), marking the first mixed-reality training system to support both pilot and aircrew instruction on the CH-53K.
Veraxx Engineering Corporation developed this innovative AATD for the H-53 Heavy Lift Helicopter Program Office (PMA-261). The system offers an immersive training environment through the use of mixed-reality and virtual-reality technology, setting a new standard for aviation training devices.

“The purpose of the device is to provide cockpit familiarization and crew resource management training to pilots and aircrew,” said Maj. Daniel Meckley, the H-53 Training Systems Integrated Product Team Lead.
Advanced Mixed Reality Training
The CH-53K AATD integrates mixed-reality technology to enhance training realism. Pilots are equipped with mixed-reality goggles, which simulate external flight environments while still allowing them to see their hands and interact with controls. However, for basic training tasks, the goggles are not required. Instead, pilots can use a large screen mounted in front of the device to complete fundamental exercises.
Meckley explained, “With the AATD, the pilots don’t need to use the goggles because there is a big screen TV in front of the device to conduct basic training.”
The crew chief, on the other hand, uses virtual reality goggles, which provide an entirely immersive experience without hand visibility. This creates a heightened focus on the simulated environment, offering a highly realistic experience during mission-specific training scenarios.
“This means the crew chief cannot see his or her hands,” Meckley added. “All they see is the simulated environment.”
One of the AATD’s most distinctive features is its ability to simulate crew positions in various parts of the aircraft. Although the crew chief’s physical training station is located behind the cockpit, the system’s technology can create the experience of being positioned anywhere inside or outside the aircraft.
“This leads to enhanced communication and crew resource management during specific training areas like aircraft startup/shutdown, confined area landings, formation flights, etc.,” Meckley said.
Enhanced Training Capabilities
The AATD is designed to prepare CH-53K aircrew members for real-world operations by simulating multiple complex flight scenarios. The system enables users to practice essential tasks, including startup and shutdown procedures, formation flying, and confined area landings. This combination of realistic simulation and advanced communication tools significantly improves the training process for both pilots and crew members.
The CH-53K King Stallion is the latest addition to the family of H-53 heavy lift helicopters, managed by PMA-261, which also oversees the CH-53E Super Stallion and the MH-53E Sea Dragon. PMA-261 is responsible for the full life cycle management of these aircraft, from procurement and development to fielding, support, and eventual disposal.
As the CH-53K enters operational service, the AATD provides a critical tool for ensuring that pilots and aircrews are thoroughly prepared for the advanced capabilities and complex missions of the new helicopter.
