MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — First-year midfielder Zach Blaum scored his first career game-winning goal Saturday afternoon, lifting St. Mary’s College of Maryland to a 1-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in a crucial United East Conference (UEC) matchup. The win propelled the Seahawks (7-6-2, 6-0-0 UEC) to an undefeated conference record and handed the Lions (12-4-1, 5-1-0 UEC) their first UEC loss of the season.
Key Moments in the Match

The tightly contested game saw both sides create scoring opportunities, but strong defensive performances kept the match scoreless for much of the afternoon. Penn State Harrisburg had the game’s first significant chance in the 27th minute when Tai Bhalla’s header was saved by St. Mary’s sophomore goalkeeper Zach Reed. This would prove to be Harrisburg’s only shot on target for the match.
The Seahawks responded in the 39th minute when sophomore forward Franco Reyes tested Lions’ goalkeeper Shayon Kashi, who made the save. Junior midfielder Jack Nelson also nearly broke the deadlock, but a timely defensive clearance by Penn State Harrisburg kept the game level going into halftime.
As the second half progressed, both teams searched for a breakthrough. St. Mary’s College pushed forward with attempts on goal from sophomore forward Lucas Evans and Blaum in the 58th minute, but Kashi remained solid between the posts for Harrisburg.
The game was ultimately decided in the 87th minute when Blaum connected with a pass from Nelson to score the game’s only goal, marking his fourth of the season. Blaum’s strike sealed a vital win for the Seahawks and secured their position at the top of the United East standings.

St. Mary’s College finished the match with a 10-7 advantage in shots, including five on target, while Penn State Harrisburg recorded just one shot on goal throughout the contest. Harrisburg, however, had the edge in corner kicks, taking eight to St. Mary’s four.
The win for the Seahawks also marked Reed’s first solo shutout of his career. The sophomore goalkeeper made just one save, a crucial one that denied Bhalla’s effort in the first half. Kashi, on the other hand, recorded three saves for Penn State Harrisburg.
