BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s and women’s swimming teams started their 2024-25 season on Saturday, October 19, with a dual meet against Bridgewater College. Despite several individual wins, the Seahawks were unable to overcome the host Eagles in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Women’s Team Results

The women’s team claimed five event victories, but ultimately fell to Bridgewater in a 166-92 defeat. Sophomore Kelsie Miller (Potomac, Md./Churchill) had an impressive showing, securing two individual wins. Miller triumphed in the 200 freestyle, finishing with a time of 2:19.10, and later claimed victory in the 200 butterfly with a 2:36.55 time.

Another standout for the Seahawks was sophomore Emerson Young (Bel Air, Md./Harford Technical), who also captured two individual event titles. Young dominated the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 1:10.37, and took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 28.40.

Young and Miller, along with first-years Ella Malzahn (Durham, N.C./Jordan) and Addison Willey (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills), combined to win the 200-medley relay with a time of 2:10.85, securing the team’s fifth event victory of the day.

Willey added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle, completing the race in 1:03.17, while also leading off the second-place 200 freestyle relay team. The quartet of Willey, Miller, junior Venus Kai Judge (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), and Young clocked a time of 1:56.59 for that relay event.

Other notable performances included first-year Lauren Goulet (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), who finished third in the 800 freestyle with a time of 10:40.14, and placed fourth in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall at 2:51.30. Judge also had a strong day, placing third in both the 200 freestyle (2:26.02) and the 400 freestyle (5:08.12), while securing fourth place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:44.14.

Malzahn rounded out the top performers with third-place finishes in both the 100 breaststroke (1:31.84) and the 200 breaststroke (3:15.15). Sophomore Kaitlyn Soldon (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) led the team in the 100 freestyle with a third-place finish (1:19.53), and Willey took fourth in the 50 freestyle (29.47).

Men’s Team Results

On the men’s side, the Seahawks were led by senior captain Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), who notched two individual victories in the 100 backstroke (58.47) and the 100 freestyle (53.93). However, the men’s team was unable to overcome Bridgewater’s depth, ultimately falling 175-86 in the season opener.

Newcomer Harrison Greenwald made an immediate impact for the Seahawks by capturing the 200 butterfly in 2:23.82. Greenwald also placed second in both the 800 freestyle (9:12.58) and the 400 freestyle (4:24.03), showing strong versatility in his debut.

Schwenk teamed up with sophomores Kyle Smith (Crofton, Md./Crofton), Qwada Moses (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic), and Anthony Davis (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) to finish second in the 200-medley relay, posting a time of 1:51.41.

Davis added another second-place finish for the Seahawks, taking the runner-up spot in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.13. He also placed third in the 100 freestyle (56.61). Schwenk, Davis, junior captain William Kendrick (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic), and Greenwald combined for another second-place relay finish, this time in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.52.

Sophomore Daniel Madigan (Waldorf, Md./North Point) secured a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.71) and took third in the 200 freestyle (2:13.46). Smith registered third-place finishes in both the 100 breaststroke (1:12.61) and the 200 individual medley (2:28.00).

Newcomer Stephen Lepine added a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle, while sophomore Luca Fairbank (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) finished fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:42.06). Junior Tony Lumezi (Towson, Md./Towson) came in fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:11.68), and Moses finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.89).

Up Next for the Seahawks

The Seahawks will return to action at home on October 25, when they host Randolph-Macon College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Aquatics Center in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. The team will also compete the following day, October 26, in a tri-meet against Randolph College and Virginia Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m.
