The St. Mary’s County Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) will honor Fire Chief Joe Gould with the Hometown Hero Award on Saturday, November 9, 2024, recognizing his exceptional leadership, dedication to public safety, and significant contributions to the community. Chief Gould is the first recipient of this award in the firefighter category, a testament to his unwavering commitment to fire prevention and public service throughout his career.

As the longest-serving Fire Chief of the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department (BDVFD), Gould has been a pivotal figure in the department, widely respected for his hands-on leadership style. Chief Gould’s career is marked by his advocacy for fire prevention programs, particularly efforts to expand smoke alarm installations in homes across St. Mary’s County. He remains one of the most active responders in the department, despite his many years of service, and is a life member of the BDVFD, underscoring his lasting dedication.

Chief Gould’s influence extends well beyond his work at the BDVFD. Over the years, he has taken on various leadership roles within the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association (SMVFA), eventually serving as President. He remains actively involved in fire safety and policy through his roles with the St. Mary’s County Fireboard Association and the Maryland State Firefighters Association.

In addition to his work in fire service, Chief Gould is committed to volunteering with other community organizations. He has been a longtime volunteer with the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad and St. Mary’s County METCOM. His broad range of service reflects his deep-rooted dedication to improving the safety and well-being of the people of Southern Maryland.
