The Charles County Commissioners, along with staff from the Charles County Animal Care Center and members of the community, gathered on October 8 to celebrate the groundbreaking of the county’s new animal care facility in Waldorf. The upcoming center, located at 5690 Piney Church Road, will offer much-needed updates and expansions, replacing the current facility that has served the area for over six decades.

The new animal care center aims to provide shelter, care, and medical services to stray, sick, injured, and unwanted domestic animals until they are placed in permanent homes. Michelle Lilly, Director of the Department of Emergency Services, highlighted the broader impact of the project during the ceremony.

“This shelter isn’t just a win for the animals – it’s a win for the community,” Lilly said. “It will serve as a place where compassion, education, and public service come together.”

The state-of-the-art center, covering approximately 22,000 square feet, will serve as both a sheltering facility and a hub for Animal Control Officers providing field services. This dual function enables a more cohesive approach to animal welfare in the county, allowing both staff and officers to collaborate efficiently.

Key features of the new facility include 60 dog kennels, 95 cat cages, and holding cages for small animals. Additionally, a livestock barn with a paddock will be part of the facility’s offerings. For cats, the center will include community cat rooms, and for more social cats, a “catio” – an enclosed outdoor space for cats to safely enjoy fresh air. Dogs will have access to indoor meet-and-greet areas where potential adopters can interact with them in a welcoming environment.

One of the standout improvements is the inclusion of a medical clinic featuring a surgery suite dedicated to spay and neuter services. This clinic will enable the care center to provide essential medical care on-site, improving health outcomes for the animals under their care. Additionally, the facility will feature soundproofing to reduce the stress caused by noise from barking, ensuring a more peaceful environment for both animals and staff.

The new Charles County Animal Care Center is designed to engage the broader community, not just as a place for adoption but as a hub for education and volunteerism. The facility will offer educational rooms, which will serve as spaces for public outreach and learning opportunities, emphasizing the importance of humane animal care.

Furthermore, the center will provide opportunities for local residents to volunteer, whether through direct care of the animals, assisting with events, or working alongside humane organizations to support animal welfare in the region.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant step in improving animal services within Charles County. As the county’s animal population has grown, so too has the need for modern facilities that can meet the evolving standards of care. The new shelter is expected to become a vital resource for the community, ensuring that animals receive compassionate care while awaiting adoption.

For those interested in adopting a pet or supporting the center’s mission, resources and updates are available on the Charles County Animal Care Center’s section of the county’s official website and its Facebook page.

The completion of the new facility promises to elevate the county’s ability to care for its animal population, while also fostering a stronger connection between the community and the welfare of its animals.
