PRINCE FREDERICK, MD – A serious motor vehicle collision on Hallowing Point Road early Monday morning left one person dead and another critically injured in a tragic series of events that Calvert County Sheriff’s Office investigators are currently piecing together.

At approximately 7:12 a.m. on October 28, 2024, deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to the 6600 block of Hallowing Point Road (Route 231) following reports of a serious accident involving multiple vehicles and an individual trapped in the wreckage. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies confirmed that one driver, Gina Taylor Johnson, 51, of Mechanicsville, had died in the crash. The severity of the incident led deputies to request the Crash Reconstruction Unit to conduct an in-depth investigation.

The preliminary investigation, led by M/DFC Jeffrey Hardesty, revealed a sequence of events involving three vehicles, each of which sustained significant damage. According to authorities, Johnson was driving a 2022 Hyundai Kona eastbound on Hallowing Point Road, passing Hallowing Lane. Behind her, 19-year-old Stacey Breanna Herbert of Lexington Park was also traveling eastbound in a 2019 Ford Fusion. Traveling in the opposite direction was 52-year-old Carla Jean Poole of Hughesville, operating a 2020 Nissan Rogue, which witnesses reported had crossed the double yellow center line just moments before the crash.

Witness statements suggest that Poole’s westbound Nissan Rogue veered into oncoming traffic, causing a head-on collision with Johnson’s Hyundai Kona. The impact was so forceful that it caused the Nissan to then collide with Herbert’s Ford Fusion, which was trailing Johnson’s vehicle.

First responders pronounced Johnson dead at the scene, while Poole was airlifted to a nearby trauma center via Maryland State Police Trooper 2 helicopter. She remains in critical condition, authorities reported. Herbert, along with a juvenile passenger in her vehicle, was transported by ground to CalvertHealth Medical Center for treatment. Officials have not released further information regarding the nature or severity of their injuries.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances that led Poole’s vehicle to cross into the eastbound lane. The Crash Reconstruction Team is continuing to examine the accident scene and gather additional evidence. The investigation, led by M/DFC Hardesty, will involve evaluating roadway conditions, analyzing vehicle data, and potentially reviewing any video surveillance footage from the area to determine factors that may have contributed to Poole’s vehicle crossing the double yellow line.

The sheriff’s office is urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or any events leading up to it to contact M/DFC Hardesty at 410-535-2800 or by email at Jeffrey.Hardesty@CalvertCountymd.gov. Information from witnesses is considered crucial to establishing the full sequence of events and may aid in identifying whether any additional circumstances or factors were involved in the tragic incident.

The section of Hallowing Point Road where the accident occurred was closed to traffic for several hours as deputies and the crash reconstruction team conducted their on-site investigation. The road has since been reopened, though law enforcement officials remain on alert for any additional leads or witness statements that could shed light on the accident.

This tragic accident marks the latest in a series of fatal collisions on Hallowing Point Road in recent years, a roadway that sees significant commuter traffic in both directions. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is expected to release more details pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, which will focus on understanding all possible contributing factors.

In the meantime, the sheriff’s office has urged drivers to exercise caution and remain vigilant, particularly on high-traffic roadways where split-second actions can have catastrophic consequences.
