According to the survey, almost half (42%) of Maryland gamers aged 18 and older consider their online communities to be potential dating pools. Instead of Baltimore’s bustling nightlife or Annapolis’s scenic waterfront, some Marylanders are finding that love is only a game away. Popular online gaming communities, such as those for World of Warcraft, are transforming into social hubs where players connect and even develop romantic relationships. The trend in Maryland reflects a broader shift in the way people view and engage in online relationships as gaming platforms offer unique opportunities for meaningful connections.

The study highlights that Maryland is part of a wider movement where online gaming is increasingly associated with romance. Among the states, Delaware ranks highest, with an impressive 75% of gamers expressing openness to finding love through their online interactions. West Virginia follows closely, with 72% of its gamers indicating they’re open to meeting romantic partners in virtual spaces like Words With Friends. This shift suggests that gamers in the Mid-Atlantic region are embracing the idea that meaningful relationships can flourish through shared in-game experiences.
However, this trend is not universal. New Mexico ranked the lowest, with only 17% of gamers in the state open to the idea of romance in gaming. Gamers there are more inclined toward conventional dating platforms or in-person encounters.
GravaStar’s findings extend beyond just openness to romance in online spaces. In Maryland, 43% of gamers reported that they had developed romantic feelings for someone they met online, underscoring how virtual spaces are reshaping interpersonal connections. Additionally, the survey revealed that 79% of respondents believe that relationships formed through gaming are as legitimate as those created in person or on dating apps. The shift toward viewing gaming as a platform for relationships indicates a changing perception of how romantic connections are made and maintained in today’s digital world.
The survey also explored which types of games are most likely to lead to romantic connections. MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games), like World of Warcraft, were the top choice, with 43% of gamers believing these immersive environments offered the most potential for forming connections. Social or casual games, such as Among Us, came in second at 30%, while cooperative games like Left 4 Dead 2 were also cited, with 15% of gamers noting their matchmaking potential. Battle Royale games like Call of Duty, however, ranked lowest at 11%, suggesting that high-intensity games may not provide the ideal environment for sparking romance.
This growing interest in gaming-based relationships highlights the unique way online communities foster connection through shared interests and collaborative play. “Gaming brings together like-minded people in ways we couldn’t have imagined a decade ago,” said Nancy Ahn from GravaStar. “The ability to connect with others through a shared passion, even when it starts virtually, can lead to friendships, partnerships, and even love.” This perspective aligns with an increasing acceptance of digital relationships, especially as more people spend time in virtual worlds where genuine connections can blossom.
