The Town of Chesapeake Beach recently held a commemorative gathering at the recently upgraded “Old Campgrounds Park” to honor the late Chuck Ruttkay, a former Town Council member known for his dedication and contributions to the community. In his memory, a Redbud Tree was planted by local residents and community members in the B Street “Campground” pocket park, a scenic space overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.
The Chesapeake Beach Garden Club organized the planting and secured a plaque honoring Ruttkay’s commitment to the town. Community member Clarence “Shoe” Schumaker personally planted the tree, a gesture reflecting the close-knit nature of Chesapeake Beach residents. Community members in attendance included Ruttkay’s family and friends, with notable attendees such as Jan Ruttkay, Marianne Valaer, Madeleine Blake, Melanie Crowder, and Karen Schumaker.

The plaque, donated by Tammie Wilhoit, Kelly Norton Gligorovic, and Karen Schumaker, was installed near the tree, allowing visitors to the park to reflect on Ruttkay’s contributions. It serves as a reminder of his legacy within the Chesapeake Beach community, where he was cherished as a friend, neighbor, and former councilman.
In preparation for a memorial service on June 29, the Chesapeake Beach Garden Club arranged to decorate the North Beach Fire Hall with over twenty floral arrangements, crafted from flowers donated by club members at the request of Jan Ruttkay. The floral displays, which filled an entire van, added a vibrant and personal touch to the gathering, reflecting the community’s gratitude and remembrance of Ruttkay’s impact.
This tribute underscores Chesapeake Beach’s commitment to honoring those who have dedicated their lives to improving and nurturing the community.
