St. Mary’s City, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s soccer team secured a spot in the United East Conference Championship semifinals on Saturday night, defeating eighth-seeded Penn State Brandywine 3-1 in a high-stakes quarterfinal matchup. Junior midfielder Jack Nelson, from Ellicott City, Maryland, led the Seahawks’ charge with a career-high two goals, propelling top-seeded St. Mary’s College to a decisive win at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. With this victory, the Seahawks (10-6-2) advance to face Penn State Harrisburg (14-4-2) in the semifinals.
Seahawks’ Journey to Victory

Penn State Brandywine made an early attempt to claim the lead just minutes into the game. In the third minute, Ethan Faulkner launched a promising shot that narrowly missed, thanks to a critical block by Seahawks defender Ethan Wright, a sophomore from Columbia, Maryland. After averting Brandywine’s early threat, St. Mary’s College took control of the game, with Nelson finding the net in the 12th minute. He capitalized on a loose ball to score his first goal of the night, giving the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.
Brandywine’s goalkeeper Elijah DeBooth proved formidable in the first half, making crucial saves to keep the Lions within reach as the teams headed into halftime with St. Mary’s holding a narrow lead.
Nelson doubled his tally in the 53rd minute, scoring his second goal to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead. However, the Lions quickly responded. In the 55th minute, Christian Zavala converted a penalty kick, sending the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to cut St. Mary’s lead to 2-1.
Despite Brandywine’s push, St. Mary’s regained their two-goal advantage in the 77th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity. Senior forward Alex Ochman set up the play with a perfectly placed corner kick from the right, which sophomore midfielder Bryce Webster skillfully backheeled to sophomore forward Lucas Evans, who completed the play with a well-executed finish.
