PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Dr. Nimfa Teneza-Mora has been appointed as the Health Officer for Calvert County, effective Nov. 13, 2024. Her appointment was confirmed by Maryland Health Secretary Dr. Laura Herrera Scott upon the recommendation of the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). The move introduces a seasoned public health expert to the county, bringing over 13 years of experience in healthcare operations, clinical research, and public health.

With a background in internal medicine and infectious diseases, Dr. Teneza-Mora brings a deep understanding of public health issues to her new role. Her career spans significant contributions to health policy development, health program management, and clinical care. As a senior military physician, she has been involved in various leadership roles within Navy medical research, where she earned accolades for her work in infectious disease research.

Dr. Teneza-Mora’s medical education began at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree. She went on to complete a range of Navy-led internships and fellowships, later pursuing a master’s degree in public health from San Diego State University. Her expertise, demonstrated across her career, aligns with Calvert County’s health priorities, according to BOCC President Earl F. “Buddy” Hance.

“Dr. Teneza-Mora’s insight and leadership in public health make her well suited to address the county’s health priorities, and we are pleased to welcome her as Calvert County’s Health Officer,” said Hance. “Her background and dedication to public health align well with our mission, and we look forward to working together to strengthen our community’s health and wellness. We also extend our thanks to the Maryland Department of Health for its partnership throughout the selection process.”

For her part, Dr. Teneza-Mora expressed enthusiasm about her new role and the opportunity to work with the team at the Calvert County Health Department. “Joining the talented team at the Calvert County Health Department is an honor, and I am eager to contribute to their mission of supporting the health and wellness of our community,” she said. “I look forward to a successful journey ahead with this caring and committed team. Here’s to being ‘one team, stronger together!’”

As health officer, Dr. Teneza-Mora will work closely with the BOCC, which serves as the County Board of Health. In this capacity, she is expected to address various public health challenges and advance health services for Calvert County residents. The BOCC hopes her experience in healthcare operations and policy development will bolster the county’s health programs, focusing on both preventive care and response to pressing health issues.
