C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School in Charles County is at the center of a growing controversy following an incident on November 15 that left a second-grader hospitalized. Details remain under investigation, but conflicting accounts from school officials and the victim’s family have fueled public outcry and widespread speculation.
Incident and Initial Reports
In a letter to parents dated November 15, Barnhart Elementary School Principal Carrie Burke described the incident as “horseplay” between two students in a school bathroom. According to Burke, a student’s jacket became entangled on a stall door hook, trapping the child. Another student sought help from school staff, who responded and called emergency services as a precaution.
Burke addressed the community’s alarm after a first responder report of a possible suicide attempt began circulating on social media. “I understand that the initial 911 report resulted in a first responder call that shared a possible suicide attempt occurred at our school,” she wrote. “This was then posted on social media by a community member, causing a bit of community concern.”
Superintendent Denounces Misinformation
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Superintendent Maria V. Navarro issued a letter on November 17 addressing escalating tensions. Navarro emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation or spreading unverified information.
“I have seen comments online stating that the school and CCPS are covering up what happened. This is not true,” Navarro stated. “The principal nor the school system are hiding anything. Rather, we are sharing what information we can while we conduct a full investigation.”
Navarro also denounced threats made against school staff in connection with the incident. “While the information circulating is alarming and involves heavy emotions, it does not warrant threats against staff or toward others involved,” she added.
Parent’s Account Raises Questions
The mother of the second-grader took to social media with a starkly different narrative, alleging that her son was deliberately harmed by another student. She claimed her child was found unconscious and foaming at the mouth in the bathroom after being “hung” by a fourth-grader.
“My child who is a 2nd grader was hung in the boys bathroom by a 4th grader,” she wrote. “I walked into the trauma room with 8-10 doctors surrounding my son. This is the most heartbreaking and traumatizing situation my family has ever been in.”
She also criticized the school’s response and called for greater awareness about bullying. “BULLYING is never ok,” she wrote. “I won’t stop until our voices are heard.”
Investigation Underway
Both CCPS and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident. A school resource officer began the police investigation on November 15, and CCPS stated that it is working with law enforcement to confirm details.
“We take reports of alleged bullying or assault very seriously,” Navarro assured the community. “CCPS will not release any additional information about this incident until the investigation concludes.”
The school system has also made mental health resources available to students, families, and staff affected by the situation.
Community Reacts
The incident has sparked intense debate online, with many parents and community members expressing outrage and demanding transparency. Others have called for patience as authorities work to uncover the facts.
As the investigation unfolds, CCPS has reiterated its commitment to student safety and urged the community to avoid jumping to conclusions.
