For Maryland men, Chick-fil-A isn’t just a go-to spot for chicken sandwiches—it’s their top choice for a first date, according to a recent survey. With the rising cost of living affecting everything from groceries to dining out, first dates are shifting toward more budget-friendly options.

A poll conducted by DatingNews surveyed 3,000 men, revealing that 54% of Maryland respondents are open to trading a costly restaurant outing for a fast food date. This pragmatic approach to romance resonated with many women as well; two-thirds of female respondents said they’d agree to a fast food date, prioritizing good company over extravagant settings.

Among Maryland men, Chick-fil-A emerged as the clear favorite for a first date, followed by McDonald’s in second place and Dairy Queen rounding out the top three. The findings suggest that fast food establishments, offering affordability and casual comfort, are becoming acceptable—and even popular—venues for first dates.

What Makes a Fast Food Date Work?
When asked why a low-cost dining experience might appeal, 41% of women said they valued “good vibes” and a fun atmosphere. Another 40% appreciated the honesty of a partner who was upfront about their budget, while 19% simply liked the idea of tasty food at a reasonable price.

Splitting the bill, a practice often debated in dating etiquette, was also widely accepted in this setting. The survey found that 56% of participants would be fine sharing the cost of a fast food meal on a first date.

Amber Brooks, senior editor at DatingNews, highlighted the financial pressures many people face today. “It seems we’re all still very aware of the cost of living and how that impacts our budgets,” Brooks said. “The good news is how keen people seem to be to accept going on a cheaper first date, showing that romance doesn’t need to involve spending lots of money!”

Other Budget-Friendly First Date Ideas
The survey also explored alternative low-cost dating options. A coffee shop outing ranked as the top choice, with 26% of participants endorsing it. Movie marathons paired with takeout came in second at 24%, and food truck hopping followed closely at 23%. While 15% of respondents approved of fast food restaurant dates, only 12% showed interest in a picnic featuring dollar menu items.

These findings underline a shift in dating culture, where authenticity and shared experiences outweigh grand gestures. For Maryland men, a meal at Chick-fil-A seems to strike the perfect balance between affordability and charm.
