The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) Highway Safety Office has teamed up with the Governors Highway Safety Association and Lyft to provide $20 rideshare credits this holiday season. The initiative aims to promote safe driving and reduce impaired driving incidents during the festive period.
Starting Wednesday, November 27, at 4 p.m., a limited number of rideshare credits will be available to Maryland residents. Eligible users can claim a $20 credit through the Lyft app by entering the code MAKEAPLAN2024 under the “Add Lyft Pass” section in the payment menu. Credits must be used within 24 hours of being claimed; otherwise, they will return to the system for others to claim.
Encouraging Safe Alternatives to Impaired Driving
This program is part of MDOT MVA’s broader efforts to combat impaired driving. Preliminary data shows that 11,300 people have been arrested for driving under the influence in Maryland so far this year. In 2023, impaired driving led to 132 fatalities and more than 2,400 injuries across the state. Of the 13,423 impaired driving arrests in 2023, 1,616 occurred between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, highlighting the heightened risk during the holiday season.
“Providing this safe ride option is a critical step in encouraging Marylanders to make responsible choices,” MDOT officials emphasized. By offering rideshare credits, the state hopes to reduce impaired driving incidents and save lives.
How to Claim the Rideshare Credit
To claim the $20 credit, Maryland residents should:
- Open the Lyft app.
- Navigate to the “Payment” section in the menu.
- Scroll to “Add Lyft Pass.”
- Input the code MAKEAPLAN2024 to apply the credit.
If all codes have been redeemed, residents are encouraged to check back periodically as unused credits will return to the system for reallocation.
Educational Outreach
Beyond the rideshare credits, MDOT MVA’s Highway Safety Office will run campaigns such as “Be the Sober Driver” and “Be the Make A Plan Driver” on various advertising platforms to educate Marylanders about the dangers of impaired driving.
The partnership reinforces MDOT’s commitment to preventing impaired driving and supporting safer roadways. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the program and learn more about the Highway Safety Office at ZeroDeathsMD.gov or by following @zerodeathsmd on social media.
