Calvert County, MD – On Giving Tuesday, December 3, 2024, first-grade students at The Calverton School participated in a heartwarming service-learning project that combined curiosity, creativity, and community appreciation. Under the guidance of their teachers, Mrs. Sakai and Ms. Murphy, the class hosted Master Deputy Clas from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for a memorable day of learning and giving.
The visit offered students a unique glimpse into the life of a sheriff’s deputy. With boundless enthusiasm, the first-graders peppered Deputy Clas with questions, such as “How old are you?” “How many ‘bad guys’ have you arrested?” and “What’s your favorite thing to do at work?” Their inquisitiveness highlighted their excitement about meeting a community hero and learning about his role in keeping Calvert County safe.

As part of their Giving Tuesday initiative, the students prepared thoughtful gift bags filled with snacks and candy for local deputies. The gesture, both simple and heartfelt, exemplified the importance of giving back and showing appreciation for those who serve and protect. The project not only reinforced the values of kindness and community service but also left a lasting impression on the deputies who received the gifts.
The event is a testament to the power of small acts of kindness and the role schools play in fostering community connections. The Calverton School’s commitment to blending education with service-learning projects continues to enrich both students and the broader community.
A special thanks goes to The Calverton School’s first-grade class for making a difference and brightening the day of local deputies through their thoughtful efforts. Their actions remind us all of the spirit of Giving Tuesday and the impact of working together to support our community.
