On Saturday, December 7, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) led the 18th Annual Calvert Shop with a Cop event, bringing holiday cheer to local children and families in need. Officers from multiple agencies, including the Maryland State Police, Prince George’s County Police Department, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, joined forces to make this heartwarming tradition a success.

The program, organized by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 109 and the Optimist Club of Calvert County, connects law enforcement officers with underprivileged children for a day of festive activities and shopping. Designed to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community, the event provides participants with an opportunity to experience the joy of the season while creating lasting memories with their families and the officers involved.

The day began with patrol vehicles picking up children from their homes, transforming the typical police cruiser into a holiday sleigh. The excitement was palpable as children arrived at Prince Frederick, where Outback Steakhouse hosted a hearty breakfast. Adding to the festive spirit, Santa Claus and The Grinch made surprise appearances, delighting children and adults alike. Laughter and excitement filled the air as the children shared their holiday wishes with Santa and exchanged high-fives with the mischievous Grinch.

After breakfast, the children were escorted in a convoy of patrol cars with lights flashing and sirens blaring—a memorable parade that highlighted the day’s celebratory nature. The procession led to Walmart, where each child embarked on a shopping spree, choosing gifts for themselves and their loved ones. Officers partnered with the children, helping them select items that would bring joy on Christmas morning. For many participants, this experience was not only about receiving gifts but also about the unique chance to bond with law enforcement in a friendly and supportive environment.

The day’s generosity didn’t end at the checkout line. Volunteers from the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department transformed into Santa’s helpers, meticulously wrapping each gift so they were ready to be placed under the tree. The children watched in awe as their selections were prepared, each package carrying the promise of holiday magic.

The success of this annual event relies heavily on the support of local organizations and community partners. Outback Steakhouse played a pivotal role by providing not only breakfast but also a delicious lunch for the participants and volunteers. Walmart’s team went above and beyond to ensure the children’s shopping experiences were seamless and enjoyable. Additional support came from the Pros Fore Clothes Foundation, Children’s Aid, Inc., CCSO civilian staff, and many other sponsors who contributed time, resources, and donations to make the day unforgettable.

The Optimist Club of Calvert County and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 109 have long championed the Shop with a Cop program as a way to strengthen ties between law enforcement and the community. By focusing on children in need, the event underscores the importance of giving back and the power of small gestures to create lasting impacts.

As the event drew to a close, the smiles on the faces of the children and the gratitude expressed by their families served as a testament to the day’s success. For law enforcement officers, the experience offered a chance to connect with the community in a meaningful way, breaking down barriers and building trust through shared joy and goodwill.

Events like Shop with a Cop highlight the importance of community partnerships and the collective effort required to make a difference in the lives of others. By coming together, the Calvert County community once again demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to feel the magic of the holiday season.

For the officers and volunteers involved, the day wasn’t just about giving gifts; it was about creating memories that would last a lifetime. The Calvert Shop with a Cop program, now in its 18th year, continues to be a cherished tradition that brings hope and happiness to the community during the holiday season.
