Maryland dog owners face some of the highest costs for pet care in the nation, with the state ranking fourth most expensive in a recent study by consumer trends experts at Wethrift. The analysis, which evaluated expenses like food, veterinary visits, vaccines, and pet insurance, found that the average annual cost of owning a dog in Maryland is $2,078.13, a significant 23.98% above the national average.

Breaking Down the Costs in Maryland

Maryland’s steep pet ownership costs are driven by expenses in several key categories:

  • Food: Maryland dog owners spend an average of $791.40 annually, which is 15.90% above the national average.
  • Veterinary Visits: Routine checkups cost $80.65 annually, 16.23% higher than the average across the U.S.
  • Vaccines: At $236.36 annually, vaccination costs in Maryland are 6.18% above the national average.
  • Pet Insurance: The most significant driver of Maryland’s high costs, pet insurance averages $969.72 annually, a staggering 38.25% above the national average.

The study highlights how location can significantly influence the cost of pet ownership, even within the same country.

Dog Ownership Reaches Record Highs Nationwide

The rising costs in Maryland and across the country haven’t deterred Americans from welcoming dogs into their homes. According to the 2024 AVMA Pet Ownership and Demographics Survey, 45.5% of U.S. households now include a dog, a sharp increase from 31.6% in 1996. The data underscores a growing trend of Americans embracing dogs as part of their families.

Nick Drewe, CEO of Wethrift, commented on the findings, saying, “Our study reveals how dog ownership costs vary across the United States, with significant differences from state to state. These findings offer a unique perspective on how location influences the expenses of caring for dogs.”

Drewe also pointed to the emotional connection Americans share with their pets, citing an AVMA survey showing that 88.8% of dog owners consider their pets family members. “This study captures not only the costs but also the dedication dog owners show nationwide, reflecting the central role these pets play in our lives,” he said.

Maryland’s Costs Compared to National Trends

Maryland’s position among the top five states reflects not just regional pricing disparities but also national trends in pet care. Rising costs for veterinary services and pet insurance are especially significant. Pet insurance, for instance, is a growing industry as more pet owners opt for financial protection against unforeseen medical expenses.

Looking Ahead for Dog Owners

The study offers valuable insights for potential dog owners in Maryland, helping them anticipate costs and budget accordingly. For current dog owners, the findings may encourage them to explore cost-saving measures, such as shopping for pet food in bulk or comparing pet insurance policies.

While the expenses of owning a dog can be high, the overwhelming sentiment among pet owners remains one of loyalty and love. As Drewe noted, the dedication to providing quality care for dogs reflects their importance in American households, transcending financial considerations.
