HOLLYWOOD, Md.,—The Greenwell Foundation celebrated the completion of its newly refurbished equine therapy arenas at the annual Holiday Horse Open House. The upgraded arenas are a key milestone in the foundation’s plans for programmatic expansion in 2025, significantly increasing accessibility and capacity for equestrian activities.
A New Era for Equine Therapy

The refurbished arenas are expected to double the foundation’s capacity for equestrian programs, providing a safe and welcoming environment for participants of all abilities.
“With the new arena project, our spaces to serve the community have been completely transformed,” said Melisa Kennedy, Equestrian Program Director. “We now have a safe, well-maintained environment where we can confidently provide exceptional programs that benefit our participants and equine partners alike. This project is a testament to our commitment to serving the community and creating meaningful connections for all.”
Ribbon Cutting and Celebration
Executive Director Maria McDonald recognized the Maryland Heritage Area Authority for their grant support in making the project possible. Trustee President Dennis England led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official opening of the new facilities.
The festivities continued with children enjoying pony rides throughout the day, creating holiday memories and introducing the community to the improved equestrian spaces.
Expanding Access and Impact
The new arenas align with Greenwell Foundation’s mission of fostering inclusion and connection through equine and nature-based programs. With the enhancements, the foundation is poised to serve more participants, from therapeutic riding clients to community members seeking recreational opportunities.
