MARYLAND, Dec. 19, 2024—Residents in the area are being targeted by a smishing scam where fraudsters pose as a road toll collection service, such as E-ZPass, claiming recipients have an outstanding balance and risk incurring a late fee. Authorities are urging caution and providing steps to protect yourself from falling victim to this scam.

How the Scam Works

The scammers send fraudulent text messages with a link, claiming to provide information about an unpaid toll. Clicking the link can lead to compromised personal and financial information.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam Text

If you’ve received a suspicious text message claiming to be from E-ZPass or another toll collection service:

  1. Do Not Click the Link: Avoid interacting with the link or entering any personal information.
  2. File a Complaint: Report the scam to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov. Be sure to include:
    • The phone number from which the text originated.
    • The website listed in the text.
  3. Delete the Text: Remove the fraudulent message from your phone.
  4. Verify Legitimate Balances (Optional): Use the official toll collection service’s website or phone number to confirm whether you owe any legitimate toll balances.

If You Clicked the Link

If you accidentally clicked the link and submitted any personal or financial information, take the following actions immediately:

  • Contact Your Financial Institutions: Alert your bank and credit card companies to secure your accounts and dispute any unfamiliar charges.
  • Monitor Your Accounts: Keep an eye on your statements for any unauthorized transactions.
  • Update Passwords: Change your passwords for accounts that may have been compromised.

Stay Vigilant

Always remember to:

  • Avoid clicking on links from unfamiliar or unsolicited texts.
  • Be cautious when providing financial or personal information online.
  • Verify the legitimacy of messages through official channels before taking any action.

By staying alert and taking these precautions, you can help protect yourself from scams and identity theft.
