ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Maryland residents and visitors are encouraged to embrace the new year outdoors with First Day Hikes, part of a nationwide initiative by America’s State Parks. From December 31, 2024, through January 2, 2025, a variety of guided and self-guided hiking opportunities will be offered across Maryland’s state parks, providing a refreshing and healthy way to welcome 2025.

Explore Maryland’s Natural Beauty

The First Day Hikes program offers a chance to reconnect with nature while exploring Maryland’s diverse landscapes. Whether guided by experienced rangers or enjoyed at one’s own pace, participants can choose from trails suited for all experience levels.

This Year’s Highlights:

  • Ranger-Led Hikes: Join knowledgeable Maryland State Park Rangers for guided adventures. These hikes feature scheduled start times and may require advance registration.
  • Self-Guided Hikes: Enjoy trails independently throughout the weekend. Visitors will find clearly marked paths, and park staff will be available to assist.
  • AllTrails-Guided Hikes: In a new partnership with the AllTrails Public Lands Program, hikers can use the AllTrails app to explore trails, track progress, and share their experiences on social media.

Special extras include First Day Hike “I Hiked” Stickers, available at select parks while supplies last. Participants are also invited to share their experiences and mileage on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website.

First Day Hikes are available across every region in Maryland, with events showcasing the state’s diverse natural beauty. For example:

  • On the Eastern Shore, hikers can explore serene woodlands, cypress swamps, or the stunning Atlantic coastline.
