According to a recent survey by HostingAdvice, “The Exorcist” (1973) tops the list as Maryland’s favorite anti-Christmas movie, with many residents seeking a spine-chilling escape from traditional holiday fare. The survey, which polled 3,000 respondents, also named “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Gremlins” as the second and third most popular anti-Christmas picks in the state.

Over 26% of Marylanders are tired of seeing “Home Alone” on repeat, followed by “A Christmas Story” (24%), “Elf” (19%), “It’s a Wonderful Life” (19%), and “The Polar Express” (11%). More than half (52%) of respondents expressed a desire for more modern and fresh Christmas movies, citing predictable storylines and over-the-top cheeriness as drawbacks.
Anti-Christmas Viewing: A New Tradition?
While traditional Christmas films dominate holiday programming, Marylanders are carving out a niche for darker and more unconventional movies. “The Exorcist” and others on the list offer a refreshing, if chilling, counterbalance to the holiday’s sugar-coated themes.
“Anti-Christmas movies allow viewers to break free from the relentless cheer and enjoy something completely different,” said Jon McDonald, a senior editor at HostingAdvice. “For many, it’s the perfect way to unwind during the holidays without the clichés.”
