The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Washington, D.C., and portions of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, effective from Sunday evening, January 5, through late Monday night, January 6, 2025.

What to Expect

The storm has the potential to bring:

  • Snow and Sleet: Total snow and sleet accumulations of 5 inches or more are possible, with some areas experiencing localized bands of up to 10 inches.
  • Freezing Rain: Ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible in certain areas.

Affected Areas

The Winter Storm Watch includes:

  • Maryland: Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Mary’s, Calvert, Montgomery, and Allegany counties
  • Virginia: Northern, central, and northwest regions, including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Loudoun
  • Washington, D.C.
  • West Virginia: Eastern counties, including Jefferson, Morgan, and Berkeley

Timing

The storm is expected to begin Sunday evening, intensify overnight, and continue through late Monday night. Hazardous conditions could significantly impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Travel and Safety Precautions

Residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Plan ahead: Significant travel delays and closures are possible. If you must travel, ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter conditions.
  • Stay informed: Monitor updates from the NWS and local authorities.
  • Prepare your home: Stock up on essentials and have a plan in case of power outages.

Gale Warning

A Gale Warning is also in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday for the middle portions of the Chesapeake Bay and the Lower Tidal Potomac River. Boaters should exercise caution.

Spotter Information

The NWS has indicated that spotter activation is not expected at this time.
