Owings, MD (Jan. 10, 2025) – The Board of Education of Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) will officially break ground on the replacement Northern Middle School on January 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The event will begin with a celebration in the cafeteria before moving outside to the site of the new construction.

“The groundbreaking for the replacement of Northern Middle School represents our commitment to providing state-of-the-art learning environments that inspire our students, support our educators, and enrich our community,” said Dr. Andraé Townsel, Superintendent of Calvert County Public Schools. “This project reflects our dedication to academic excellence and sustainability, ensuring that future generations of learners thrive in an innovative and environmentally responsible facility.”

The new Northern Middle School, designed by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates Architects and constructed by Keller CM, will be built just north of the existing building. Upon completion, the current school will be demolished to make room for improved parking and vehicle drop-off/pick-up areas.

The 109,237-square-foot facility will have a State Rated Capacity (SRC) of 796 students. Certified through Green Globes, it will be Calvert County’s third environmentally friendly school building, furthering CCPS’s commitment to sustainability.

The new school is expected to be ready for use during the 2026-2027 academic year, with the final phase of construction, including demolition and site improvements, anticipated to conclude in Spring 2027.

The replacement Northern Middle School represents a significant step toward providing modern and sustainable educational facilities for Calvert County students, supporting the district’s goals of academic excellence and community enrichment.
