Maryland’s sports wagering market ended the first half of Fiscal Year 2025 with significant contributions to the state, totaling $6,510,765 in December 2024 alone. Over the first six months of FY2025, sports wagering generated $46,576,505 for the state, a substantial increase compared to $24,593,908 during the same period in FY2024. All contributions are directed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education initiatives across the state.

During December, Maryland sports bettors wagered $637,301,168 and won back $591,678,179 in prizes. The state’s sports wagering ecosystem now includes 11 mobile platforms and 13 retail sportsbook locations. A noteworthy development in December was the reopening of Long Shot’s sportsbook in Frederick on December 21, now operated by Caesars Sportsbook, replacing its previous partner Betfred. The venue had been closed since June 9.

For December 2024, the combined handle across retail and mobile platforms reached $637.3 million, with retail wagering accounting for $17.8 million and mobile wagering comprising $619.4 million. Prizes paid to bettors totaled $591.7 million, while the overall hold (the amount remaining after prizes) stood at $45.6 million, representing 7.2% of the handle. The taxable win, calculated after deducting prizes, promotional wagers, and other expenses, amounted to $43.4 million, generating a state tax of $6.5 million.

The December report reflects continued growth in Maryland’s sports wagering industry, driven primarily by mobile platforms, which accounted for $43.2 million of the $43.4 million taxable win. Retail sportsbooks contributed $190,755 to the taxable win, resulting in $28,613 in state tax, while mobile platforms contributed $6,482,152 in tax revenue.

Since the program’s launch in December 2021, Maryland’s sports wagering market has contributed $135,029,665 to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs. Additionally, expired prizes have generated $3,611,544 for the Problem Gambling Fund, which addresses gambling addiction and related issues.
