The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) has confirmed one case of Legionnaires’ disease at the Dorsey Run Correctional Facility. Earlier this week, an incarcerated individual at the facility exhibited symptoms of shortness of breath and a persistent cough. The individual was transported to a local hospital, where they were diagnosed with the illness. The patient remains hospitalized, though their condition is improving.

The safety and well-being of staff and incarcerated individuals remain DPSCS’s highest priority. Medical personnel, in coordination with the Anne Arundel County Health Department and Maryland Department of Health, have been actively monitoring the situation. Following health department recommendations, protective measures have been implemented for staff and individuals housed in the same area as the affected individual.

Legionnaires’ disease, caused by Legionella bacteria, is not transmitted from person to person. Instead, the bacteria spread through small droplets of water or mist containing the pathogen. Common sources include plumbing and air systems. Early symptoms often mimic the flu, such as fever, cough, and fatigue, but the illness can develop into severe respiratory complications. Individuals experiencing symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention, and staff members are directed to report any symptoms to their supervisors.

DPSCS has enlisted Capital Construction to test the water supply at the facility and replace air filters in the air-handling systems. Showering schedules in buildings 1 and 4 have been modified while these areas are being assessed for potential contamination.

Despite the situation, Dorsey Run Correctional Facility remains operational. DPSCS continues to take all necessary precautions to address the issue while ensuring the safety and security of everyone in the facility. Staff and residents are encouraged to remain alert and adhere to health guidelines as the investigation progresses.
